Did you know? The construction sector contributes to nearly 22% of India’s annual CO2 emissions. This alarming statistic is not just a data point—it’s a wake-up call. As the planet heats and urbanization intensifies, the urgent shift toward eco-friendly building materials becomes not just desirable, but essential.
At Auroma Architecture, we believe buildings should not separate us from nature but reconnect us to it. Led by Architect Trupti Doshi, a TEDx speaker and sustainability pioneer based in Pondicherry, our studio is rewriting the narrative of construction—infusing emotion, ecology, and science into every brick laid and every curve drawn.
If you're someone who seeks a space that breathes, heals, and elevates—not just shelters—then you're in the right place. Below, we delve deep into the Top 7 Eco-Friendly Materials that are shaping the future of green building construction, all of which feature in our work at Auroma Architecture. Each material isn’t just sustainable—it tells a story, echoes a philosophy, and serves a purpose beyond its form.
1. Bamboo In Construction
Bamboo is more than a plant—it’s nature’s scaffolding. As one of the fastest-growing renewable resources on Earth, bamboo matures in just 3–5 years compared to decades for timber. At Auroma, we integrate bamboo in construction for structural elements, cladding, shading devices, and even intricate joinery.
Its tensile strength rivals that of steel, and its hollow structure allows flexibility during earthquakes. But beyond engineering, bamboo brings a tactile warmth and poetic rhythm to space—something Architect Trupti Doshi describes as "architecture with a heartbeat.”
2. Fly-Ash Bricks
India produces over 200 million tons of fly ash annually, a byproduct of thermal power plants that often goes to waste. By incorporating fly-ash bricks into our projects like the Auroma French Villaments, we divert waste from landfills and reduce dependency on fired bricks—one of the top soil and carbon polluters.
Fly-ash bricks are lighter, cost-effective, and provide better insulation. Most importantly, they support circular construction—one where waste becomes a beginning, not an end.
3. Recycled Wood
Every plank of recycled wood holds a memory—of forests, of homes, of time. At Auroma Architecture, we treat it with reverence. Whether it’s the restored balconies in French colonial homes or detailing in meditation halls, reused timber reduces deforestation, saves energy, and lends unmatched character.
In Trupti’s words, “Material is memory. When you reuse, you do not just save trees—you preserve legacy.”
4. Passive Cooling Materials
Buildings should cool like skin—not with air conditioners but through breath. In our climate-responsive designs, we use passive cooling materials like lime plaster, CSEB (compressed stabilized earth blocks), oxide flooring, and terracotta tiles that regulate heat naturally.
Our Sharanam Convention Centre—a project recognised by the United Nations—is a testament to this. Built entirely from site soil with unfired earth blocks and minimal cement, it stays cool even in the searing Tamil Nadu heat, without artificial cooling. Acoustic comfort, thermal balance, and elegance meet under its vaulted earthen roofs.
5. Renewable Insulation
Why insulate with toxic foam when nature provides alternatives? We champion renewable insulation using materials like cork, sheep wool, rice husk ash, and recycled cotton.
These not only offer excellent thermal performance but are breathable, non-toxic, and biodegradable. When integrated into wall assemblies or roofs, they help buildings achieve net-zero energy targets without compromising on health or comfort.
6. Low-VOC Paints
Many paints release harmful gases known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) long after application, compromising indoor air quality. Our answer? Low-VOC paints that protect both your lungs and the planet.
Derived from natural oils, plant-based resins, and mineral pigments, our finishes breathe with the walls. Whether it’s a child’s study nook or a healing center, we ensure every brushstroke contributes to well-being.
7. Eco-Friendly Building Materials As A Whole System
Each of the above materials stands strong on its own. But when combined under a holistic design philosophy, they transcend materiality. They become living systems. At Auroma, we don’t see eco-friendly building materials as a checklist—but as the lifeblood of a building’s spirit.
Be it a school designed as a teacher or a home imagined as a mother, the material palette must respond to climate, story, and human emotion. That’s where our integrated sustainability engineering—pioneered by Architect Trupti Doshi—comes in. It’s architecture that unfolds your potential, aligns with Earth’s rhythm, and outlives trends.
