Commissioned by the discerning client, Ramya Ravi, this 4,500 sqft dwelling epitomises the essence of a tranquil, Vaastu-compliant haven.

The residential building boasts a sleek and contemporary exterior design, serving as a striking contrast to its serene surroundings. However, the true magic lies within, where traditional interior elements transport residents to a bygone era of elegance and cultural richness.

Client Brief

A residence that embodies both modernity and tradition seamlessly. Attention to detail in the incorporation of traditional elements, such as red oxide flooring and wooden columns. A central courtyard that serves as a tranquil retreat. A sustainable construction approach that aligns with environmental consciousness. Compliance with Vaastu principles for positive energy flow. Innovative design elements that enhance both aesthetics and functionality.

Key Features

Upon entering, the guests are welcomed by the inviting warmth of traditional elements like "Thinai" (a traditional Tamil seating area) adorned with rich, red oxide flooring, setting the tone for the entire residence. This fusion of old and new immediately captures the essence of the design concept.

At the heart of the residence lies a central courtyard that not only enhances natural lighting and ventilation but also symbolises a harmonious connection with nature. It provides a serene space for meditation and relaxation.

Throughout the house, wooden columns are strategically placed, not only for structural support but also to honour the principles of Vaastu Shastra. These columns are intricately carved, adding a touch of timeless elegance to the interiors.

The building incorporates several innovative design features, including a stack effect for natural ventilation, a filler slab on the ceiling of the staircase for energy efficiency, alcoves for displaying art or cherished possessions, intricate jali work for aesthetics, a stunning spiral staircase, and an earth wall that merges the indoors with the outdoors seamlessly.

To ensure sustainability, the residence was constructed using eco-friendly practices. The rat trap bond technique, using fly ash bricks which minimises energy consumption while maximising insulation. Guniting technique was employed for added structural integrity.

The rammed earth wall was integrated in the building for the feature of applications on the Thermal mass,Internal load bearing unstabilised walls and external load bearing stabilised walls.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, Ramya Ravi's Pondicherry residence is a perfect embodiment of a modern vision brought to life with a profound respect for tradition and culture. It seamlessly blends the old with the new, creating a unique and inviting living space that embodies harmony, tranquillity, and the essence of Vaastu principles. This remarkable project stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional design elements in a contemporary world.
